about

This is the first song I worked on with Ian and Colin.

At the end of the song I say "So we want you to go to Outer Mongolia to replace the wheel." The day we went recorded the vocals for this track, we went back to the now-closed studio in North Hollywood where I had once worked as a studio assistant and errand boy.

They brutally underpaid me for the job I did and never reimbursed for the money I spent on gas doing errands for them. I took the job because any money was better than none. Before I quit the job, I accidentally broke a wheel off one of the chairs in the office. They made me promise I would replace the wheel. Where the hell would I go to replace an office chair wheel? They told me there was a location somewhere in Burbank but they didn't give an exact address. So I forgot about it, then my car engine seized up and died and I had to quit my job.

Colin, Ian and I drove to the studio a few months later to cut some vocals and the guy reminded me that I still hadn't replaced the wheel. The chair still worked. You could sit in it. Only a wheel was broken off. It happens sometimes. But since he called me out in front of a crowded office, it was humiliating.

When I went into the booth to do vocals, my embarrassment turned into anger and I used to deliver a good performance. When it came time to do adlibs, I just ranted about the damn wheel. You only hear the opening part of that rant before the song fades out. I wanted to delete that part because it wouldn't make sense to anyone listening but we never got around to it.
